곤잘레스 장관은 해임된 연방 검사들은 법무부내 지도부 개선을 위한 관리직 검토 작업의 일환으로 해임됐다고 설명했습니다. 미국의회내 일부 의원들은 이들 검사의 해임은 정치적 동기에 의한 것이었다고 주장하고 있습니다.
곤잘레스 장관은 이 서한은 미국 의회 상원 법사위원회에서 이 문제와 관련한 청문회를 이틀 앞두고 공개됐습니다.

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says he did not act improperly in firing eight U.S. federal prosecutors last year.
In a letter published in today's (Sunday's) "Washington Post" newspaper, Gonzales says he and his staff did not seek to remove any U.S. attorney for an "improper reason."
Gonzales says the prosecutors were fired as part of a management review designed to improve leadership in the Justice Department. Some U.S. lawmakers allege the dismissals were politically motivated.
Gonzales's letter was published two days before he is scheduled to testify about the matter before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
Democratic Party lawmakers are investigating whether he misled Congress about the reasons for the dismissals. Speaking on American television (ABC) today, the ranking Republican member of the Judiciary Committee, Arlen Specter, said he wants Gonzales to justify why the prosecutors were fired. If he cannot do so, Senator Specter said, Gonzales should consider reinstating them.
