Japan's lower house of parliament has passed a controversial bill meant to begin clearing the way to revise the country's pacifist constitution.
The measure approved today (Friday) will help set up an eventual national referendum on how to revise the constitution.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's coalition has a sizable majority in the lower house, and easily passed the bill. The legislation now goes to the upper house, where it is also expected to pass.
The 1947 Japanese constitution drawn up by the U.S. following World War Two prohibits Japan from waging war or maintaining a military. Japan has what it calls a self-defense force.
Since taking office last year, Prime Minister Abe has made revising the "no war" clause of the constitution a top priority.
Such changes could upset Japan's Asian neighbors, where memories of Japan's wartime aggressions are still vivid.
