U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has announced that the standard tour of duty for U.S. Army soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan will be extended from 12 months to 15 months.
Gates told reporters Wednesday that under the new policy, effective immediately, active duty Army units will deploy for not more than 15 months, and will return home for not less than 12 months.
The defense secretary said the new policy will give American soldiers more predictability, so they will know what to expect, and it will provide the U.S. military with the capacity to sustain the number of deployed forces for the next 12 months. Gates rejected a reporter's suggestion that the U.S. Army is "broken", but said it is "stressed."
