Afghan authorities say they have uncovered a mass grave in northeastern Afghanistan containing the bodies of hundreds of civilians who were killed during the country's communist era.
Local officials today (Thursday) said they exhumed nearly 400 bodies from the grave, which is located in a desert outside the town of Faizabad, capital of Badakhshan province.
Officials said the victims were likely killed by pro-communist forces during a decade of fighting that began in 1979.
Tens of thousands of Afghans were killed during years of conflict between the Soviet-backed Afghan government and U.S.-backed Islamist opposition.
