조지 부시 미국 대통령은 아사드 대통령과의 만남은 시리아로 하여금 자신들이 주류의 일부라고 믿게 만들 것이라고 지적하면서 펠로시 의장의 시리아 방문을 비판했습니다. 부시 대통령은 시리아는 외국인 전투원들이 이라크로 들어가도록 허용함으로써 테러를 지원하고 있다고 비난했습니다.
그러나, 펠로시 의장은 시리아와 대화하는 것이 중요하다고 강조했습니다.
한편, 앞서 이번 주 부시 대통령의 공화당 소속 의원들이 시리아를 방문해 아사드 대통령을 만났습니다.

The speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who she says is willing to engage in peace talks with Israel.
Pelosi says during the meeting in Damascus today (Wednesday) she delivered a message from Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to Mr. Assad that Israel was ready for talks.
President Bush has criticized Pelosi's trip to Syria, saying meetings with President Assad lead Syria to believe it is part of the mainstream. Mr. Bush said Syria is sponsoring terrorism by allowing foreign fighters into Iraq.
But Pelosi has said it is important to hold a dialogue with Syria.
