Authorities in Gauhati city say two of the victims were in critical condition.
Police officials blame rebels of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom for the explosion.
The militant group has been fighting for the state's separation from India since 1979.
Separatists believe New Delhi's policies exploit the region's resources and bring little benefit to local residents.
The rebels have intensified their attacks since a truce and peace talks with the government fell apart in September.
They have been accused of killing at least 70 civilians this year. Most of the victims are Hindu-speaking migrant workers, who the rebels say are monopolizing scarce jobs.
