(Eng)

The percentage of people in China who cannot read has increased in recent years - reversing decades of progress.

China's state-run media report that the country's illiterate population has jumped by 30 million - an increase of more than a third between 2000 and 2005.

The China Daily newspaper quotes an official of the ministry of education (Gao Xuegui) as saying many rural poor young people drop out of school to find work in cities. As migrants, they and their families then often lack access to public education.

The official also says some local governments abandoned their literacy programs after reaching 90 percent literacy targets in 2000.

Funding is also an issue. The education ministry says it now spends less than one cent for each of the nation's 116 million illiterates and has asked for a 13-fold increase.
