The European Union's foreign policy chief has warned that agreement by some EU countries to take part in a U.S. missile defense system could damage relations with Russia.
Javier Solana told the European Parliament today (Thursday) that EU member states have the right to decide their own policies, but that they must be compatible with the Union's security interests. He said the union and NATO must each hold a broad debate on the issue.
His statements reflect a division within Europe about the U.S. proposal for dealing with attacks from rogue states such as Iran and North Korea. Russia strongly opposes the missile system plan.
The Czech government Wednesday agreed to talks with the U.S. on plans for hosting radar systems for missiles to be deployed in Poland. But leftist European parliamentarians said in debate today (Thursday) that the system could lead to a new arms race.
