he U.S. Senate has narrowly approved a measure that ties funding for the war in Iraq to a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops by March 2008.
In a 50-to-48 vote Tuesday, the Senate rejected a Republican amendment that would have stripped the Iraq spending bill of language imposing a non-binding timetable. The vote was largely along party lines.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (of Nevada) said public opinion polls show a majority of Americans favor a timeline to bring the troops home. He said the time had come to send the president a message.
Following the vote, the White House said in a statement that the bill has no chance of becoming law. The statement said President Bush is disappointed that the Senate continues down a path with a bill that he will veto.
Senators are expected to vote on a final version of the 122-billion-dollar spending bill later this week. The bill would fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
