A Pakistani official says clashes this week between Uzbek militants and local tribesmen in northwestern Pakistan have killed 160 people.
The governor of North West Province told reporters in Peshawar Friday that 130 of the dead were Uzbeks and Chechens.
The battles erupted Monday near Wana, the main town in the tribal region of South Waziristan, close to the border with Afghanistan.
There are reports that religious leaders and local elders Friday failed in their efforts to negotiate a truce between tribesmen and the militants.
A Pakistani army spokesman (Major General Wahid Arshad) said the clashes illustrate that tribesmen embrace government efforts to clear the area of foreign extremists.
