나우루즈 명절을 맞아 이란에서도 새 해가 시작됐습니다. 하지만 이란 국민은 이제는 익숙해진 정부의 억압정책에 시달리고 있습니다. 최근 테란에서는 또 다시 몽둥이로 무장한 경찰들이 평화적인 시위를 진압했습니다. 당시 시위에 참여한 교사들은 낮은 임금과 열악한 근무 환경의 개선을 요구했습니다.
현지 언론 보도에 따르면 이 사건으로 천 명 이상이 유치장에 구금됐으며, 일부는 에빈 감옥으로 옮겨져서 수감됐습니다. 이달 초에는 30명의 여권 운동가들이 테란에서 시위를 벌이다가 비슷한 고통을 당했습니다.
한편 국경없는기자회는 이란 북서부 쿠르드 지역에서 수감된 4 명의 이란기자에 대한 석방을 촉구했습니다. 수감된 사람 중 아소 살라는 주간지 ‘디가’에 글을 쓰는 언론인입니다. 그는 지난 8일 사난다즈에서 국제 여성의 날 기념 시위를 취재하다가 체포됐습니다. ‘키아 자하니’는 쿠르드어 최대 방송사인 쿠르디스탄 TV에서 오랫동안 일했습니다. 그는 지난 달 24일 체포됐습니다. ‘아드난 하산푸어’와 ‘카와 자와마르드’는 수개월간 감옥에 갇혀있으며, 가족이나 변호사의 방문도 허용되지 않고 있습니다.
이란 소수계 쿠르드족들을 위한 한 인권단체는 쿠르드계 이란 여성 5명에게 사형 선고가 내려졌다며 국제사회에 경종을 울렸습니다. 이중 한 명인 모하바드 마후디는 자신을 강간하려고 한 남성을 살해했다는 이유로 교수형에 처해질 위기에 놓였습니다. 두 자녀를 둔 어머니인 ‘말렉 사마에 고어바니’는 불륜을 저질렀다는 이유로 돌에 맞아 처형당할 위험에 처해있습니다. 이란 쿠르드계 인권단체 관계자에 따르면 나머지 3명의 여성도 석연치 않은 이유로 사형 언도를 받았습니다.
미국 존스홉킨스대학교 교수이며, ‘테헤란의 롤리타’라는 책의 베스트 셀러 작가이기도 한 ‘아자르 나피시’ 씨는 이란인들에게 국내 암담한 상황을 외부에서도 인지하고 있다는 것을 알려야 한다고 말했습니다.
혁명 후 8년간 이란에 살았다는 나피시 교수는 “가장 비참한 것은 누구도 자신을 돌보지 않고, 고립되었다는 생각:”이라며 “이란 사람들에게도 그들이 혼자가 아니라는 것을 알려야 한다”고 말했습니다.
한편 미국 국무부 션 매코맥 대변인은 이제 이란 정부도 주민들에 대한 억압을 중단하고, 모든 이란인들의 인권을 존중할 때라고 말했습니다.

Nowruz marks the new year in Iran, but the Iranian people are facing all-too-familiar repressive tactics by the Iranian government. Recently, baton-wielding security forces in Tehran broke up yet another peaceful demonstration -- this time of teachers protesting low pay and poor working conditions.
According to news reports, more than one thousand people were hauled to detention centers, and some ended up in Evin [Eh-veen] prison. Earlier this month, more than thirty women's rights demonstrators in Tehran suffered a similar fate.
Meanwhile, the press freedom organization Reporters Without Borders has called for the release of four imprisoned journalists from the northwestern Kurdish area of Iran. Aso [Ah-so] Salah writes for the weekly journal "Didgagh [Dee-gah]." He was arrested in Sanandaj on March 8th, while covering a demonstration marking International Women's Day. Kia [Kee-a] Jahani [Jah-hah-nee] is a long-time contributor to the Kurdish-language television station, Kurdistan T.V. He was arrested on February 24th. Two other journalists from the region, Adnan Hassanpour and Kaveh [Kah-wah] Javanmard [ja-wahn-mahrd], have been imprisoned for several months and have been denied visits from family or lawyers.
Moreover, a group promoting human rights for Iran's Kurdish minority has sounded an alarm over the sentence of death imposed on five Kurdish Iranian women. One of the women, Mohabbat [Mo-HAH-bahd] Mahmoudi [Mah-moo-dee], was condemned to death by hanging for allegedly murdering a man who tried to rape her. Another, Malek Shamameh Ghorbani [gore-BAH-nee], a mother of two young children, has been sentenced to death by stoning because she allegedly had an extra- marital affair. According to the Association for Human Rights in Iranian Kurdistan, the three other Kurdish Iranian women were also sentenced to death in problematic cases.
Azar Nafisi, a scholar at Johns Hopkins University and author of the best-selling memoir "Reading Lolita in Tehran", says it is important for the Iranian people to know that their plight does not go unnoticed:
"Let them know that they're not alone. I lived in Iran for eighteen years after the revolution. One of the worst things is when you think you're alone - that nobody knows about you and nobody cares."
"It is time for the Iranian government, says U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormick, "to cease the systematic oppression of its citizens [and] respect the human rights of all Iranian people."
