한국 정부는 과학자들의 체세포복제를 통한 줄기 세포 연구를 제한적으로나마 다시 허용하기로 결정했습니다.
한국 정부는 지난해 황우석박사 연구비리 사태가 터진 후 관련 연구를 중단 시켰었습니다. 황우석 박사는 당시 연구 결과를 조작하고, 윤리적이지 못한 방법으로 여성의 난자를 확보한 것으로 밝혀져 큰 파문을 불러일으켰었습니다.
서울대학교 수의학과 교수였던 황 박사는 2005년까지도 국가적 영웅 대접을 받았으나, 최고 권위의 과학 학술지 ‘사이언스’에 게재한 논문이 사기였음으로 드러나며 교수 직에서 사임했습니다. 황 박사는 당초 11명의 환자로 부터 얻은 복제 배아에서 줄기세포를 확립하는 데 성공했으며, 이를 통해 불치병을 고칠 수 있다고 주장했었습니다.
하지만 줄기세포는 조작됐거나, 처음부터 존재하지 않았던 것으로 드러났습니다.

A South Korean presidential panel has decided to allow local scientists to resume the use of embryonic stem cells in their research.
South Korea suspended such research last year after an investigation determined that a prominent local scientist, Hwang Woo-suk, had fabricated data and committed ethical lapses in acquiring human eggs for study.
Hailed as a national hero in 2005, Hwang resigned when a paper he sent to the journal, "Science", proved to be fraudulent. The biomedical scientist had claimed to have derived stem cells from the cloned embryos of 11 patients, which raised hopes of curing previously untreatable diseases.
Most of the embryos turned out to be fake or to have never existed.
