세계보건기구,WHO는 유엔이 1993년에 결핵병을 공공의 적이라고 선언한 이래 처음으로 전세계 결핵병 증가가 멈추어졌다고 말했습니다.
WHO 결핵국은 22일, 세계 결핵의 날에 즈음해 발표한 세계결핵통제 보고서에서 전세계의 결핵병 환자비율이 2004년에 최고로 기록된후 2005년에는 더 이상 증가하지 않았다고 밝혔습니다.
WHO 결핵퇴치국, 마리오 라비글레옹 국장은 결핵병 증가가 멈춘 것은 아시아와 라틴 아메리카 및 아프리카, 동유럽 등 결핵병 발생율이 높았던 지역에서 결핵병 신규환자가 늘어나지 않았기 때문이라고 설명했습니다.
라비글레옹 국장은 그러나 구 소련 공산권 지역과 중국의 일부 지역에서 결핵치료약에 대해 내성을 지닌 결핵균 발생이 걱정스러운 수준에 달하고 있다고 우려를 나타냈습니다.

A new report by the World Health Organization says the global tuberculosis epidemic has leveled off for the first time since the U.N. agency declared the disease a public health emergency in 1993.
The WHO's Global Tuberculosis Control report says the percentage of the world's population struck by TB peaked in 2004 and held steady in 2005.
The director of WHO's Stop TB Department (Mario Raviglione) says the success is due to the regular, if slow, decline of tuberculosis in Asia and Latin America, and a possible peaking of the epidemic in Africa and eastern Europe.
But Raviglinoe says experts are concerned about forms of drug-resistant tuberculosis that are at "alarming" levels in the former Soviet Union and parts of China.
Another health official (UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot) says the problem of drug-resistant tuberculosis could be be particularly serious in Africa, where TB is a major cause of death among people living with HIV-AIDS.
