뉴질란드의 헬렌 클라크 총리는 이라크 전쟁을 둘러싸고 미국과의 관계가 긴장상태에 처해진 이래 처음으로 죠지 부시 미국 대통령과 정상회담을 갖기위해 워싱턴으로 향하고 있습니다.
클라크 총리는 20일 백악관에서 아프가니스탄과 남태평양지역의 안보구축 문제를 부시대통령과 논의할 예정입니다. 클라크 총리는 지난 2002년 마지막으로 백악관을 방문했었습니다.
뉴질란드는 미국 주도의 이라크 침공에 반대했으나 그후 아프가니스탄에서의 국가 재건과 치안확보 노력을 지원함으로써 미국의 치하를 받았습니다.

New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark is flying to Washington for her first meeting with U.S. President George Bush since their relations became strained over the Iraq war.
Ms. Clark will meet Mr. Bush at the White House Wednesday to discuss efforts to bring security to Afghanistan and the South Pacific region. Her last White House visit was in 2002.
Wellington opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, but has won praise from Washington for supporting reconstruction and security efforts in Afghanistan.
The Bush administration also has commended New Zealand's role in trying to stabilize troubled South Pacific nations such as East Timor, the Solomon Islands and Tonga.
Ms. Clark also is expected to push for better trade terms with the United States.
