미군 병사 1명이 지난해 이라크인 구금자들에게 총격을 가해 숨지게 한 혐의로 유죄를 선고받았습니다.
미군 배심원단은 지난 2006년 5월에 발생한 사건과 관련해 레이몬드 지러드 미군 하사를 과실치사 혐의로 유죄평결을 내렸습니다.
지러드 하사는 또한 사법방해 혐의 등 다른 혐의에 대해서도 유죄평결을 받았으나 계획살인 혐의에 대해서는 무죄평결을 받았습니다.
계획살인 혐의로 유죄선고를 받을 경우 종신형에 처해질 수 있습니다.
검사 측은 지러드 하사가 구금자들이 달아날 수 있도록 허용한 뒤 이들이 달아나는 동안 부하들에게 총격을 가하도록 지시했다고 주장했습니다.
지러드 하사의 지휘아래 있던 병사 세 명은 지로드 하사에게 불리한 증언을 하는 조건으로 검찰 측과 합의해, 두 명은 18년형을, 1명은 9개월형을 선고받았습니다.
지러드 하사에 대한 선고공판은 19일부터 열립니다.

A U.S. soldier has been convicted in the shooting deaths of three Iraqi detainees last year.
A military jury found Army Sergeant Raymond Girouard guilty of three counts of negligent homicide in the May 2006 incident. He was also convicted of obstruction of justice and other charges. But the jury acquitted him of premeditated murder, which could have earned him a life sentence.
Prosecutors say Girouard allowed the detainees to flee, then ordered his men to shoot them as they ran.
Three other soldiers under his command reached plea agreements with prosecutors in the case in exchange for testifying against Girouard. Two of them were sentenced to 18 years in prison, while the third received a nine-month jail term.
The sentencing phase of Girouard's trial takes place Monday.
