A key committee in the U.S. House of Representatives has approved a 124 billion-dollar funding bill that would set a deadline for ending the Iraq war.
The House Appropriations Committee today (Thursday) voted 36-to-28 to send the bill to the House floor. Included in the measure is a provision calling for U.S. troops to leave Iraq by September 2008.
The White House has threatened to veto any measure that includes a deadline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.
On Wednesday, the Senate voted to debate a resolution that would set a goal of March 2008 for troops to be withdrawn. The Democratic-controlled Senate is awaiting a counter-resolution from Republican John Warner that he says will call for benchmarks to be set, but will not include a specific withdrawal date.
Democrats are split between liberals who are demanding a timetable for ending U.S. involvement in Iraq, and more conservative members who think lawmakers should not try to manage the course of war.
