British Prime Minister Tony Blair is standing firm on his 40 billion dollar proposal to upgrade the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet, saying the upgrade is "essential for security in an uncertain world."
Mr. Blair told lawmakers today (Wednesday) work should begin now to replace Britain's aging fleet of Vanguard-class submarines, which carry U.S.-built Trident missiles. The prime minister has stressed the importance of nuclear deterrence in light of possible threats from such countries as Iran and North Korea.
The proposal has caused a revolt within Mr. Blair's ruling Labor Party. About 60 lawmakers say they plan to vote against the plan later today.
However, analysts say the measure is likely to win approval, if, the opposition Conservative Party joins forces with Blair supporters, as expected.
The proposal has also energized the traditional anti-nuclear lobby, including trade unions, religious groups and environmentalists.
