President Bush is requesting funds to add another four-thousand soldiers to the U.S. troop buildup in Iraq.
On Saturday, the president asked Congress for three-point-two billion dollars to pay for the extra forces.
The soldiers would be in addition to the troop increase of 21-thousand-500 Mr. Bush announced in January, with the goal of improving security in Baghdad.
The president is proposing to cancel three-point-two billion dollars in low-priority defense items to offset the cost of his latest request.
Some members of the opposition Democratic Party, which controls Congress, have questioned the president's strategy in Iraq. In a letter to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Mr. Bush said the revised request would help military commanders achieve the goal of establishing Iraq and Afghanistan as democratic and secure nations free of terrorism.
