Afghan officials say nine civilians have been killed in a NATO airstrike during a battle with militants in a northeastern province. Five women and three children were reported among the dead in Kapisa province.
Authorities said NATO forces called in airstrikes after their base came under attack by militants late Sunday.
A U.S. military spokesman said the incident is under investigation. He said he had no immediate information on casualties.
Separately on Sunday, U.S. and Afghan officials say at least nine civilians were killed in Nangahar province during a gun battle between U.S. troops and militants who staged a suicide ambush on an American convoy.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has ordered a probe into Sunday's deaths.
U.S. officials say it is not yet clear whether the civilians were killed by American troops or by the militants.
