유엔 국제사법재판소는 26일 세르비아는 1995년 스레브레니차에서 자행된 보스니아계 회교도들에 대한 집단학살에 대해 직접적인 책임은 없지만, 세르비아 지도자들은 이러한 범죄를 막는데 영향력을 행사하지 않았다고 판결했습니다.
유엔 국제사법재판소는 네덜란드에서 이 같은 판결을 내리면서 세르비아를 강력하게 비판했지만, 전쟁 배상금을 요구하는 보스니아의 요구를 거부했습니다.
보스니아는 1990년 대 발칸반도에서 벌어진 내전동안 보스니아 회교도들과 크로아티아인들에게 널리 자행된 집단학살을 주모한 혐의로 전 유고슬라비아 연방의 세르비아를 기소했습니다. 국제사법재판소가 세르비아에 대해 유죄 판결을 내렸으면 세르비아는 보스니아에 수십억 달러의 전쟁 배상금을 지불해야 했었을 수도 있습니다.

The highest U.N. court has ruled that Serbia is not directly responsible for the genocide of Bosnian Muslims at
Srebrenica in 1995, but its leaders failed to use their clear influence to prevent the massacre.
In handing down its ruling today (Monday), the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands was strongly
critical of Serbia, but it also rejected Bosnia's request for financial compensation.
Bosnia-Herzegovina filed a suit accusing what was then Yugoslavia of masterminding the widespread ethnic
cleansing of Bosnian Muslims and Croats during the Balkan conflict of the 1990s. A judgment in its favor could
have resulted in Serbia paying billions of dollars in reparations.
U.N.'s International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (in The Hague) already has convicted a
number of individuals for war crimes, including genocide, during the war in Bosnia.
