An Israeli newspaper reports Syria has begun an "unprecedented" effort to strengthen its armed forces with Iran's help and its troops appear to be moving closer to the border with Israel.
The Haaretz daily says the Syrians are bolstering their forces in all areas, with particular emphasis on missiles and long-range rockets to compensate for a weak air force.
The report says Syria's troop movement on the Golan Heights is similar to its maneuvers prior to the Syrian offensive on the same front during the 1973 Yom Kippur war.
Israel and Syria are officially at war, although there have been no open hostilities between them for decades.
