미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 20일 중동 평화과정을 되살리기 위한 노력의 일환으로 요르단의 압둘라 왕과 회담했습니다.
라이스 장관은 19일 예루살렘에서 이스라엘의 에후드 올메르트 총리, 팔레스타인의 마흐무드 압바스 자치수반과 3자회담을 가진 바 있습니다.
라이스 장관은 또한 20일 사우디 아라비아, 이집트, 아랍 에미레이트 연합, 요르단의 국방장관과도 만납니다.
이같은 회담은 온건파인 마흐무드 압바스 팔레스타인 자치수반의 입지를 강화시키고 팔레스타인 집권당인 하마스가 이스라엘을 인정하는 등 국제사회의 요구를 받아들이도록 설득하기 위한 것입니다.
앞서 이달 압바스 수반이 이끄는 파타당과 회교 과격단체인 하마스는 연합정부를 구성하기로 합의했습니다.
그러나 양 측 간의 합의에는 미국과 이스라엘이 요구하고 있는 주요 사항들이 빠져 있습니다.
미국과 이스라엘은 하마스에 대해 이스라엘의 존재를 인정하고 폭력을 포기하라고 촉구하고 있습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in Jordan where she met today with King Abdullah, following her talks Monday with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in Jerusalem.
Rice also met today with the security chiefs of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
Those talks are aimed at bolstering the moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and bringing the ruling Hamas group towards acceptance of international demands such as recognizing Israel.
Earlier this month, Mr. Abbas's Fatah faction and the Islamic group reached agreement on a unity government. But the accord does not require Hamas to recognize Israel or renounce violence, key U.S. and Israeli demands.
