미국의 딕 체니 부통령은 아시아 지역의 안보와 국제 테러퇴치 노력에 관해 논의하기 위해 일본에 도착했습니다.
체니 부통령은 20일 도쿄에서 아베 신조 총리를 비롯한 일본 정부 고위 관리들과 회담합니다.
그러나 최근 미국정부의 이라크 침공 결정을 비판한 바 있는 규마 후미오 일본 방위상은 체니 부통령의 면담대상에서 제외됐습니다.
체니 미국 부통령과 일본 정부 관리들은 최근 북핵 6자회담에서 북한이 핵 시설을 폐쇄하기로 동의한데 관해 논의할 것이라고 미 행정부의 한 고위 관리는 전했습니다.
체니 부통령은 오는 22일에 일본을 출발해 미국 영토의 일부인 태평양상의 괌 섬을 방문하고 그곳에 주둔하고 있는 미군 병사들을 위문할 예정입니다.
체니 부통령은 그 뒤 호주를 방문해 존 하워드 총리와 야당 지도자 케빈 러드 노동당 총재를 만납니다.

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has arrived in Japan for talks about Asian security and the global war on terrorism.
Cheney is expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other top officials in Tokyo today (Tuesday). Cheney will not be meeting with Japanese Defnese Minister Fumio Kyuma who recently criticized Washington's decision to invade Iraq.
A senior U.S. administration official says the two sides likely will discuss North Korea's recent agreement to begin closing its nuclear facilities. He said the parties may consider ways to move the process forward.
The U.S., Japan, South Korea, China and Russia helped reach the landmark deal with North Korea last week.
Cheney is to leave Japan Thursday to make a quick visit to troops in the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam. He will then travel to Australia for talks with Prime Minister John Howard and opposition leader Kevin Rudd.
