British Prime Minister Tony Blair says he wants to crack down on gun crime. This follows the shooting deaths of three teenagers in south London.
Mr. Blair told BBC television that the age for imposing the mandatory minimum five-year prison sentence for anyone convicted of illegal possession of a firearm should be lowered from 21 to 17.
The prime minister said he is also considering other proposals suggested by London's Metropolitan Police. Mr. Blair denied there has been a breakdown in British society.
He called the wave of gun violence "a specific problem within a specific criminal culture." The shooting deaths of the teenage boys in south London this month has sparked national debate about guns and gangs among youths in Britain.
