이탈리아의 북부도시 비첸차에서 17일 수만명의 시위대들이 미국의 이라크 증파계획에 반대하는 시위를 벌였습니다.
오늘 시위에 참가하기 위해 이탈리아 전역에서 열차와 버스들이 시위자들을 실어날랐습니다. 오늘 시위에는 좌파인사들과 녹색당, 파시스트주의자, 세계화반대 운동가들과 지역주민들이 대거 참가했습니다. 시위 현장에는 천여명의 경찰과 헬리콥터들이 동원 돼 만일의 사태에 대비했습니다.
로마 주재 미국 대사관은 미국인들에게 이 지역으로 여행하는 것을 삼가도록 권했습니다.
한편, 비첸차 시의회는 새로운 달 모린 미군기지 사용의 연장안을 통과시켰습니다. 이탈리아의 로마노 프로디 총리는 지난 달에 자신은 이 계획에 반대하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.

Tens of thousands of people have gathered in the northern Italian city of Vicenza to protest a planned U.S. military base expansion nearby.
Special trains and buses have brought in protesters from all over Italy to take part in the march today (Saturday). Leftists and green parties, pacifists, anti-globalization activists and local residents are expected to participate.
More than a thousand police and several helicopters are in place along the march route.
The U.S. embassy in Rome has advised Americans to avoid traveling to the area.
The Vicenza City Council approved the extension of the U.S. base in a new location at the Dal Molin airport. The project would almost double the U.S. military presence in the Vicenza area.
Prime Minister Romano Prodi said last month that he would not oppose the plan.
