조지 부시 미국대통령이 발다스 아담쿠스 리투아니아 대통령과 만나, 이라크와 아프가니스탄 전쟁에 기울인 공헌에 감사의 뜻을 표했습니다.
두 정상은 12일 워싱턴 백악관에서 만났습니다.
부시 대통령은 리투아니아가 구 소련 붕괴 직전까지 50년간 소련의 통치를 받은 것은 역사적으로 ‘큰 비극’이라고 말했습니다. 또 리투아니아가 아프가니스탄 정부를 지지한 것은 용감한 행위라고 칭하고, 이라크 주민을 지원한 데 대해서도 감사를 나타냈습니다.
부시 대통령은 아담쿠스 리투니아니아 대통령이 자국민들이 무비자로 미국에 입국할 수 있도록 양국간 비자협정을 체결하는 데 강한 의지를 보이고 있다며, 자신도 의회와 협력해서 공정한 관련 규정이 마련될 수 있도록 노력하겠다고 말했습니다.
리투아니아는 아프가니스탄 재건 사업에 참여했으며, 이라크에도 수십명 규모의 병력이 주둔해있습니다.

President Bush has met with Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus and thanked him for his country's contribution to the multi-national effort in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The two met today (Monday) at the White House.
President Bush said Lithuania's history has been one of what he called "great tragedy," a reference to the nearly five decades of Soviet rule in the Baltics that ended shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union. He said Lithuania has bravely stood up to support the government of Afghanistan. And he thanked Mr. Adamkus for his support of the people of Iraq.
Mr. Bush said the Lithuanian president is "quite adamant" about ending the visa requirement for Lithuanians traveling to the United States, now that Lithuania is a member of the European Union. Mr. Bush said he will work with the U.S. Congress to get a fair piece of legislation on the issue.
Lithuania is working on reconstruction projects in Afghanistan and has a few dozen troops in Iraq.
