Rival Palestinian groups Hamas and Fatah have signed an agreement on forming a unity government, in an effort to end factional violence and crippling international sanctions.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah and Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal signed the agreement today (Thursday) in front of Saudi King Abdullah.
The king hosted reconciliation talks between the two sides in Mecca. Their talks began Wednesday, and today the parties agreed on how to divide cabinet posts.
It was not immediately clear whether Hamas had agreed to international demands to renounce violence, recognize Israel, and respect past agreements with the Jewish state.
The Palestinians hope a unity government can persuade international donors to restore aid that was suspended when Hamas took power last year.
Fighting between Hamas and Fatah has killed more than 90 Palestinians since December.
