Minority Republicans in the U.S. Senate have blocked a resolution that opposes President Bush's plan to send thousands of additional troops to Iraq.
Forty-nine Senators voted in favor of the resolution late Monday -- far less than the two-thirds majority needed to clear the way for a vote on the measure.
The vote was largely along party lines. Democrats hold a 51-to-49 majority over Republicans in the Senate.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (of Nevada) said by blocking the resolution, Republicans gave President Bush an opening to escalate the war in Iraq.
The Senate's top Republican, Mitch McConnell (of Kentucky), said he voted against the resolution to protest the Democratic leadership's decision to bar two Republican-sponsored Iraq resolutions from being considered.
Senator Joseph Lieberman (of Connecticut), an Independent, said he fears the resolution would send the wrong message to U.S. troops in Iraq.
