백악관은 5일 총 2조9천억 달러 규모의 예산안을 국회에 제출했습니다.
상원 군사위원회는 6일 아침 부시 대통령의 국방예산안에 관한 청문회를 개최합니다.
이 예산안은 순수 국방예산으로 약 5천억 달러를 책정한 외에 이라크와 아프가니스탄 주둔 미군 작전을 위해 2천3백50억 달러의 예산이 필요하다고 말하고 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 일부 의료와 교육 분야의 예산은 삭감했습니다.
또한 국제계획 가운데 에이즈 예방과 치료를 위해 50억 달러 이상을 책정하고 있으며 말라리아 퇴치, 수단과 레바논 등 평화유지 활동에 3억 달러를 책정했습니다.
미국 의회 민주당 지도자들은 부시 대통령의 예산안을 즉각 비난했습니다.
미 의회 상원과 하원의 예산위원회는 모두 부시 대통령의 예산안이 국가를 잘못된 방향으로 이끌고 있다고 말했습니다.

Congress begins its scrutiny of President Bush's 2008 budget proposal today (Tuesday), just hours after White House officials released details of the two-point-nine-trillion-dollar spending plan.
The Senate Armed Services Committee will open a hearing (shortly / in a few hours) on the defense portion of Mr. Bush's spending request. The budget lists 235 billion dollars for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, in addition to nearly 500 billion dollars for other Defense Department costs.
The president's spending plan would cut funding for some government health-care and education programs in the United States. Among international programs, it pledges more than five billion dollars for treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS worldwide, 300 million dollars for combating malaria, and assistance for peacekeeping efforts in Sudan, Lebanon and elsewhere.
Reaction to the budget proposal from Democratic Party leaders in Congress was swift and sharply negative.
Chairmen of the Senate and House (of Representatives) budget committees both said Mr. Bush's spending plan would move the nation in the wrong direction.
