A retired Chinese doctor who exposed a blood-selling scandal that infected thousands of people in eastern China with HIV has been placed under house arrest.
Fellow activists and friends say officials in Henan province placed Dr. Gao Yaojie under house arrest Thursday to prevent her traveling to Beijing to apply for a U.S. visa.
She planned to go to the United States in March to receive a leadership award for supporting the legal rights of women in China.
Gao, who is in her 80s, was instrumental in exposing government-supported blood-buying programs in the 1990s that infected more than 50-thousand poor farmers with HIV.
Some people were infected after receiving contaminated blood donations. Others were infected by dirty needles.
