Japan's coast guard says it has detected a Chinese ship near disputed islands in the East China Sea.
Coast guard officials say the Chinese ship, called Dongfanghong Number Two, ignored repeated warnings to leave the area today (Sunday).
They say the ship appears to have been conducting surveillance activities near the islands, known as "Senkaku" in Japan and "Diaoyu" in China.
A Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman says Tokyo had lodged a protest with China over the incident.
Both countries claim sovereignty over the islands, which are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and possible oil deposits.
The dispute is one of several that have chilled diplomatic ties between China and Japan, although the countries are now working to strengthen their relations.
