대부분의 일본인들은 애국심을 갖고 있으나 과거 침략과 식민지 지배 등 과거사에 대해서는 반성해야 한다는 생각을 갖고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.
일본 아사히 신문의 여론조사 결과 응답자 가운데 85 퍼센트는 일본의 과거 아시아 침략사에 대해 반성해야 한다고 답했습니다. 그러나 78 퍼센트는 적어도 일본에 태어난 것이 일정 부분 자랑스럽다고 생각하는 것으로 나타났습니다.
아사히 신문은 일본인 1 천8백명을 대상으로 여론 조사를 실시했습니다. 아사히 신문은 여론조사결과 많은 일본인들이 애국심을 갖고 있으나 젊은층에서 애국심이 가장 낮았다고 말했습니다.
애국심을 학교에서 가르쳐야 하는지의 여부에 대해서는 ‘가르쳐야 한다’가 50 퍼센트, ‘그럴 필요가 없다’란 응답이 41 퍼센트에 달했습니다.

A newly published survey says most Japanese are patriotic, but reflective about Japan's past wartime aggression.
The poll by a Japanese newspaper found 78 percent of respondents expressed at least some pride in their homeland, while 85 percent said the country should reflect on its past aggression in Asia. The Asahi Shimbun surveyed about 18-hundred people in Japan.
Patriotism was lowest among younger Japanese.
Half the survey's respondents approved of Japan's teaching of patriotism in school and 41 percent disapproved.
Last month, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's conservative government enacted a controversial revision to the country's Basic Education Law, which now requires schools to instill patriotism, a taboo topic since World War Two.
Disputes over Japan's wartime history continue to rattle relations with neighboring countries, which accuse Japan of failing to atone for its past atrocities.
