The United States has criticized China for allegedly testing an anti-satellite weapon last week.
A National Security Council spokesman (Gordon Johndro) said such tests are not consistent with the spirit of cooperation that both China and the U.S. aspire to achieve in the field of space. He said the U.S. and several other countries have expressed their concerns to the Chinese.
The respected trade publication "Aviation Week" said Tuesday that U.S. intelligence agencies believe China performed the test on January 11th. However, the agencies have not yet verified the test and are still trying to obtain data on it.
The magazine says the alleged test destroyed an aging Chinese weather satellite. If the test was successful, it would indicate a major advance in China's military capabilities.
