중국 정부 관리들과 유럽연합 EU 관계자들은 무역과 환경, 인권을 포함한 22개 분야에서의 협력을 확대하는 방안을 논의하기 시작했습니다. EU의 베니타 페레로-월드너 (Benita Ferrero-Waldner) 대외관계 담당 집행위원은 17일 중국의 리자오싱 외교부장과 중국 베이징에서 만났습니다.
양측은 20여년 전 서명한 무역협정을 갱신하기 위한 1차 회담을 가졌습니다. EU는 페레로-월드너 집행위원의 이번 중국 방문 목적의 하나는 중국이 지구온난화의 주범인 온실가스의 배출량을 줄이기 위한 유럽협약에 참여하도록 설득하는 것이라고 말했습니다.
한편, 리 부장은 중국은 EU의 대중국 무기금수 조치를 해제할 것을 요청할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. EU는 지난 1989년 중국 베이징 톈안먼 광장에서 당국이 친민주주의 시위자들을 강권 진압한 뒤를 이어 무기금수조치를 취한바 있습니다.

The EU external relations commissioner, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing in Beijing today (Wednesday) for the first round of talks on updating a trade pact signed more than 20 years ago.
The EU says one goal of Ferrero-Waldner's trip is to persuade China to join a European initiative to cut greenhouse gas emissions, which experts say contribute to global climate change.
Li says China is requesting an end to the arms embargo the EU imposed on China after the 1989 government crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
