Prison guards in the western U.S. state of California used pepper spray and gas grenades to quell a huge riot by inmates.
Prison officials say at least 24 inmates were taken to the hospital Saturday with moderate to serious injuries. One prisoner suffered severe head injuries and stab wounds.
Officials say no guards were hurt in the melee that involved at least 800 inmates at the California Institution for Men (at Chino), 65 kilometers east of Los Angeles. The facility's Web site indicates it has a design capacity of 28-hundred inmates, but houses 63-hundred men.
