British Prime Minister Tony Blair is holding talks with leaders of the United Arab Emirates today (Tuesday) -- the final leg of his regional tour aimed at boosting Mideast peace efforts.
Mr. Blair's office says the prime minister is to discuss ways to support Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, whose Fatah faction is locked in an increasingly violent showdown with the governing Islamic militant group Hamas.
Mr. Blair held talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders before traveling to the U.A.E.
The British leader's visit coincides with the emirates' first national elections, where hand-picked voters are choosing members of an advisory body seen as an eventual precursor to a national parliament.
Mr. Blair's office praised the elections as "steps in the right direction," even though the vote is severely restricted.
