인도네시아 관리들은 수마트라 섬 북부에 지진이 강타해 적어도 7명이 숨지고 100명 이상이 부상했다고 말했습니다.
인도네시아 정부는 18일 동이트기 이전에 북부 수마트라 주에 강도 5.7의 지진이 발생했다고 말했습니다. 정부 관리들은 이번 지진으로 무너지는 건물 파편에 의해 6명이 사망하고 노인 한 명은 심장마비로 사망했다고 말했습니다.
관리들은 또 이번 지진으로 수 백 채의 가옥이 파괴되고 여러 채의 회교 사원과 교회들이 피해를 입었다고 말했습니다. 또 지진으로 인한 산사태가 발생해 주요 도로들이 봉쇄돼 지진 피해를 입은 20개 마을을 위한 구호노력이 차질을 빚었습니다.
관리들은 이번 지진으로 집을 잃은 사람들을 위해서 임시 거처를 설치했다고 말했습니다.

Indonesian officials say an earthquake has struck the northern part of Sumatra island, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 100.
Authorities say the magnitude five-point-seven quake hit North Sumatra province before dawn today (Monday) (at 0440 local time / 2140 UTC Sunday). They say six people were killed by falling debris, while an elderly man died from a heart attack.
Officials say the quake destroyed hundreds of homes and damaged several mosques and churches. It also triggered landslides that blocked major roads, hampering efforts to reach about 20 villages in the quake zone.
Authorities have set up temporary shelters for hundreds of people left homeless.
Several aftershocks hit North Sumatra, sending panicked residents running out of their homes. The region is still recovering from the December 2004 Asian tsunami, which devastated Aceh province farther north.
