칠레의 전 독재자 아우구스토 피노체트 전 대통령이 10일 향년 91세의 일기로 사망했다고 수도 산티아고에 있는 군병원 대변인이 밝혔습니다.
이 대변인은 피노체트 전 대통령이 심장 마비와 관련한 합병증으로 숨졌다고 말했습니다.
피노체트는 일주일 전 심장 마비 증세를 보여 군병원에 입원해 긴급 수술을 받는 등 고통을 겪어왔습니다. 이 병원의 의사는 하루전인9일 심신 치료를 시작할 정도로 피노체트의 건강상태가 호전됐다고 말했었습니다.
의사들은 그러나 10일 그의 건강상태가 갑자기 악화돼 중환자실로 급히 옮겨 치료를 해왔다고 말했습니다.
피노체트의 사망소식이 전해지자 그의 지지자 소수가 경찰이 삼엄한 경계를 서고 있는 병원 주변에 모여 애도를 표시했습니다. 이들은 피노체트를 지지하는 구호를 외치며 칠레 국가를 불렀습니다.
피노체트 전 대통령은 칠레의 정치적 경제적 혼란시기인 1973년에 권력을 잡았습니다. 피노체트는 미국 중앙정보국 CIA의 후원을 등에 업고, 당시 선거에서 당선된 사회주의 대통령 살바도르 알렌데를 축출한뒤 권좌에 올랐습니다.
피노체트 전 대통령은 그의 집권 시기인 1973년부터 1990년까지 정치적 이유로 3천명 이상의 사람들을 살해하거나 납치하는 등 다양한 인권 탄압을 가해 비난을 받았습니다.

A hospital spokesman says former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet has died at the age of 91.
General Pinochet died of a complications of a heart attack today (Sunday) at a military hospital in the Chilean capital Santiago.
Pinochet suffered the heart attack a week ago. Doctor said on Monday that he was improving and that he had begun physical therapy. However, doctors today said his condition had worsened suddenly and he was rushed to intensive care.
A small crowd of Pinochet's supporters gathered at the hospital under heavy police security when news of his death became public. They shouted pro-Pinochet slogans and sang the national anthem.
General Pinochet seized power during a period of economic and political unrest in 1973. With the backing of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, he overthrew elected socialist President Salvador Allende.
Pinochet was accused of committing numerous human rights violations during his rule from 1973 to 1990, when more than three-thousand people were killed or kidnapped for political reasons.
