A senior Israeli official says Israel has not ruled out a pre-emptive strike against Iran to keep Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In a newspaper interview published today (Friday), Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh said he was not advocating such a strike, and said he sees it only as a last resort.
His comments are the strongest statement on the issue yet from a senior Israeli official, and highlight growing concerns in Israel about Iran's nuclear program.
The spokeswoman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (Miri Eisen) said the Iranian issue poses an "existential threat" to Israel in what she called an "impossible situation."
The Iran nuclear issue is expected to top the agenda when Mr. Olmert meets with President Bush at the White House on Monday.
