Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with President Bush during the U.S. leader's brief stopover in Moscow next week.
A Kremlin spokesman said today (Friday) Mr. Putin's visit Wednesday will be a gesture of courtesy. Mr. Bush's plane will stop for about an hour in Moscow to refuel on its way to a summit in Vietnam.
The spokesman told the Associated Press that the two will discuss Russia's bid to join the World Trade Organization and probably also talk about proposed sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program.
Relations between Moscow and Washington have been strained over Iran, with the White House favoring sanctions and the Kremlin leery of imposing restrictions on its trading partner.
But today's apparent breakthrough on Russia's joining the W.T.O. may help smooth over strains.
The White House had mentioned the stop-over meeting during a briefing Thursday but gave no details.
