Voters in Panama have approved a five-point-two billion dollar, seven-year plan to expand the Panama Canal.
With nearly all of the ballots counted, officials said the modernization plan received about 80 percent support. Voter turnout was estimated at about 40 percent.
The plan will create a new shipping lane using new locks and a wider, deeper channel to allow the world's largest ships to use the canal system.
Supporters of the expansion say it is essential for Panama to stay competitive in global shipping, and will provide thousands of jobs and boost the country's economy.
Opponents argued it will benefit the canal's customers more than Panama's citizens.
