A Russian deadline for registering foreign charities and human rights groups expires today (Wednesday), leaving scores of still unregistered non-governmental organizations unsure of what happens next.
Under a new registration law, all foreign NGOs must submit a long list of paperwork, including passport numbers and home addresses of founding officers in their organizations.
The French News Agency quotes registration officials as saying only 91 organizations were registered by mid-day today. Officials have estimated there are 200 to 500 groups affected by the law, including adoption agencies and human rights groups.
Moscow has not offered details of penalties it might levy against organizations that fail to register on time. Some organizations said Tuesday that Moscow would move to shut down any unregistered NGOs.
