(Eng)

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, says the Security Council has reached a tentative agreement on a resolution that would impose sanctions on North Korea, in the wake of its claimed nuclear test.

Bolton told reporters in New York today (Friday) that there is still some work to be done, and that further changes to the agreement could be made. He said a vote on the measure is tentatively set for Saturday.

The U.S. proposed a draft resolution to Security Council members that would retain stringent economic and weapons sanctions against North Korea, including a travel ban and financial restrictions. The tentative agreement apparently does not include an arms embargo.

Earlier today, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and Chinese President Hu Jintao announced they had reached a consensus to support sanctions against the North. But the two North Korean neighbors agreed that the Korean peninsula should be made nuclear-free in what they called "a stable manner."

Meanwhile, Chinese and Russian officials meeting today in Moscow said again that they oppose what Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called "extreme sanctions."

Also today, a U.S. defense official said analysis of seismic data and air samples taken following North Korea's claim of a nuclear detonation shows no evidence of such an event. But he said that does not rule out that a nuclear test was conducted.
