이란은 핵무기 제조를 추구하지도 않으며 그렇게 할 필요도 없다고 마흐무드 아흐마디네자드 이란 대통령이 말했습니다.
아흐마디네자드 대통령은 21일, 뉴욕 유엔본부에서 기자회견을 갖고 이같이 말하면서 이란이 핵무기를 개발하지 않는다는 보장을 제시하기 위해 더 이상 무엇을 할 수 있는지에 관해서는 당혹감을 갖고 있다고 덧붙였습니다. 아흐마드네자디 대통령은 또 다시 이란이 핵개발 계획은 평화적 사용을 위한 것이라고 다짐했습니다.
아흐마디네자드 대통령은 이보다 앞서 20일 저녁, 뉴욕의 저명한 연구기관에 초대되어 질의응답이 진행되는 가운데 2차세계대전 당시 독일 나치스에 의한 유대인 대학살, 홀로코스트가 정말로 일어났었느냐고 또 다시 의문을 제기했습니다.
아흐마디네자드 대통령의 유엔 방문은 콘돌리사 라이스 미 국무장관의 반대에도 불구하고 유엔 안전보장 이사회의 초청으로 이루어졌습니다.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says his country is not seeking to build nuclear weapons, and does not need to.
Speaking to reporters at United Nations headquarters in New York, Mr. Ahmadinejad said he is "at a loss" as to what more Iran can do to provide guarantees that it is not developing a nuclear weapon.
Iran is a signatory to the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. Tehran has so far ignored an August 31st U.N. Security Council deadline to suspend uranium enrichment to allay concerns about its nuclear program. The United States is pushing for sanctions against Iran for defying the deadline.
Mr. Ahmadinejad said, again, that Iran's nuclear program is for peaceful uses.
On Wednesday evening, the Iranian president answered questions from members of a prestigious New York think tank.
Mr. Ahmadinejad again questioned whether the Holocaust really happened.
