부쉬 대통령은 19일 유엔총회 연설에서 수단 다르푸르 지역의 폭력사태 종식을 돕기 위한 특사 지명을 밝힐 것이라고 미국 정부 관리들이 말했습니다.
관리들은 부쉬 대통령이 앤드루 나치오스 전 미 국제개발처 처장을 특사로 임명했다고 밝혔습니다.
이와는 별도로 수단 정부 관리들은 아프리카연합 소속 평화유지군 병력이 다르푸르에 6개월 더 주둔하도록 허용할 것임을 내비쳤습니다. 아프리카연합 소속 군 병력의 임무는 이달 말을 시한으로 끝납니다.
한편 수단 정부는 아프리카연합군 병력을 규모가 더 크고 장비도 잘 갖춘 유엔 평화유지군으로 대체하려는 유엔의 계획을 거부하고 있습니다. 오마르 알-바쉬르 수단 대통령은 다르푸르의 유엔 병력을 외국점령군으로 취급할 것이라고 말했습니다.

U.S. officials say President Bush will name a special envoy to try to help end the violence in Sudan's Darfur region when he addresses the U.N. General Assembly today (Tuesday).
The officials say Mr. Bush has decided to appoint Andrew Natsios, a former administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development.
In another development, VOA's correspondent at the U.N. says Sudanese officials have signaled they will allow African Union peacekeepers to stay in Darfur for another six months. The current A.U. peacekeeping mission expires at the end of this month.
Sudan has come under diplomatic pressure to extend the A.U. mandate. African Union officials say a formal decision could come on Wednesday.
Sudan's government has blocked a U.N. plan to transform the A.U. mission into a larger, better-equipped U.N. force. Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir says he would treat U.N. troops in Darfur as a foreign occupation force.
