네그로폰테 국장은 CIA 계획을 계속할 수 있도록 허용돼야할 것이라면서 미국 국내 법에 따라 무엇이 정확히 허용되는 지를 명시할 명백한 지침이 필요하다고 말했습니다.
조지 부쉬 대통령의 스티븐 하들리 국가안보보좌관도 미국 텔레비전 방송에 출연해 이와 유사한 발언을 했습니다.
베트남 전쟁 포로였던 존 메케인 의원을 포함한 일단의 저명한 공화당 출신 상원의원들은 전시 포로 대우에 관한 국제적인 규범을 요약한 제네바 협약에 따라 테러 수감자들을 대우해야할 것이라고 말하고 있습니다.
메케인 의원은 ABC-TV 방송에 출연해 미국은 다른나라들에 윤리적인 본보기가 돼야할 것이라고 강조하면서 미국의 적들이 수감자 대우에 관한 국제적인 규범을 재해석할 경우 미국인들의 삶은 위태로워질 수도 있을 것이라는 우려를 표명했습니다.

The Bush administration continues to argue for tough measures on interrogating and trying terror suspects, despite opposition by some fellow party members.
Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, said today (Sunday) on Fox News that the Central Intelligence Agency interrogation program has provided invaluable information that has saved lives and thwarted terror plots.
He says the program must be allowed to continue. He says clear guidance is needed to define what exactly is allowed under U.S. domestic law.
President Bush's National Security advisor, Stephen Hadley, made similar comments on U. S. television.
A small group of prominent Republican senators -- including Vietnam war POW John McCain -- say the detainees should come under the Geneva conventions, which outline international norms for the treatment of prisoners during wartime.
McCain said on ABC television that the U.S. must set an ethical example for others. He expressed concern that American lives could be endangered if enemies of the U.S. choose to reinterpret international standards on the treatment of detainees.
President Bush last week urged Congress to pass his version of a law allowing the use of tough interrogation tactics on suspected terrorists.
