유엔 안전보장이사회는 중국의 강력한 반대에도 불구하고 버마문제를 의제로 올리기로 표결했습니다. 미국은 15일 버마의 인권탄압으로 지역불안정이 초래됐다며 유엔 안보리가 조치를 취해야한다고 요청했었습니다.
바클라프 하벨 전 체크 공화국 대통령과 노벨 평화상 수상자인 데스몬드 투투 남아공화국 대주교는 버마 난민들의 유입이 지역 불안정을 가져왔다는 내용의 보고서를 지난해 유엔에 제출했었습니다.
버마의 야당인 민족민주동맹-NLD은 유엔의 결정을 환영했습니다. 또한 이웃국가인 태국에 있는 버마 망명정부인 버마연방 국민연합 정부 또한 이같은 조치를 환영했습니다. 중국의 왕 광야 유엔주재 대사는 버마문제는 국제안전에 위협이 되지않는다며 강력히 반대한 바 있습니다.

The U.N. Security Council has voted to put Burma on its agenda, despite strong objections from China.
The United States requested the Security Council action on Friday. It said the long-standing human rights problems in Burma have resulted in regional consequences.
Former Czech President Vaclav Havel and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu of South Africa presented a report to the U.N. late last year that said the flow of refugees from Burma causes regional instability.
From within Burma, the opposition National League for Democracy welcomed the U.N. decision. And from neighboring Thailand, the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma also praised the move. The coalition is a self-proclaimed Burmese government in exile.
China's U.N. ambassador (Wang Guangya) strongly opposed the agenda measure. He called it "preposterous" and said Burma's problems do not pose a threat to international security.
