유럽연합 회원국들은 레바논 남부지역에 추가파견되는 유엔 평화유지군에 약 7천 명의 병력을 보내기로 약속했습니다. 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장은 25일, 브뤼셀에서 유럽연합 관계관들과 회담을 가진뒤 유럽연합의 추가파견 병력규모를 밝히면서 이는 레바논 유엔평화유지군, UNIFIL 병력확장의 근간이 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
아난 사무총장은 다음 주에 중동지역을 방문해 레바논의 시리아쪽 국경지역에 대한 평화유지군의 순찰과 헤즈볼라 무장해제 문제 등을 논의합니다.

France says that all of the two thousand troops destined for Lebanon will be in that country within three weeks.
French Defense Minister Michele Aliot-Marie also told the Wall Street Journal that France has received an important clarification on the troops ability to use force in their peacekeeping mission.
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Friday that France will lead the international force until February 2007. Italy will then take over.
Italy says its troops could be deployed as early as Tuesday.
European nations have pledged nearly seven-thousand troops for the expanded U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon.
Mr. Annan is due to visit the Middle East early next week to discuss outstanding issues such as how Lebanon's border with Syria will be patrolled and Hezbollah disarmed.
