The United States says Iran's response to an international proposal regarding Tehran's nuclear program "falls short" of U.N. conditions.
A State Department spokesman (Gonzalo Gallegos) said Washington is consulting with other United Nations Security Council members on next steps.
The spokesman noted that a Security Council resolution required Iran's full and verifiable suspension of uranium enrichment by August 31st.
The five permanent Security Council members plus Germany have offered incentives if Iran suspends the sensitive nuclear work.
Tuesday, Iran said it was ready for "serious negotiations" on its nuclear program, but did not say if it will stop enrichment activities by the deadline.
World powers continue to study Iran's formal response to the international incentives offer.
