Officials are appealing for calm in the Democratic Republic of Congo, after a third day of gunbattles between supporters of the two main presidential candidates.
The fighting appeared to die down today (Tuesday) after President Joseph Kabila ordered all D.R.C. army troops back to their barracks.
At least five people have been killed in the fighting between Mr. Kabila's military supporters and forces loyal to main presidential challenger Jean-Pierre Bemba.
United Nations peacekeepers are now protecting Mr. Bemba's Kinshasa compound, where the sides clashed both today and Monday.
U.N. mission chief William Swing has urged the sides to stop shooting and begin a dialogue, while the European Commission (envoy Louis Michel) called for a halt to all military provocation.
The fighting began Sunday, after Congo's electoral commission said Mr. Kabila and Mr. Bemba would face each other in a late-October run-off vote.
